Driving through fog is one of the most frustrating things. I have to go so slow and I can’t see more than 10 feet in front of me. As someone who likes to be in control, I like to see the entire road and everything that’s coming my way. But I’ve found that life with Jesus is more like driving through fog than driving down that clear road.
Recently it feels like I’ve been swallowed by fog and have no idea what’s ahead of me. There are days where the fog feels so thick I don’t even know which way is forward! Sometimes I wonder if I’m just walking in circles over and over again.
Why would a good, loving, Father put us in fog and keep us from seeing the path and the plan ahead?? Why do you make it foggy Jesus?!?! As I wrestled with these questions, Jesus gently reminded me it’s because we were created to be dependent on Him.
If the road was clear and we knew everything then we would be able to see everything in the future and we wouldn’t need God because we could figure it all out on our own.
Knowledge is power and if we know the future, we can control the future and if we can control the future, then we don’t have to trust God. God doesn’t want us to have control, He wants us to have faith.
His heart is not for us to be self sufficient, but for us to live in relationship with Him, fully dependent on His strength to get us through, not our own.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” -2 Corinthians 5:7
When I’m blinded by the “fog” Satan tries to convince me that it’s a punishment for my weakness, but God says it’s through my weakness that He is strong. The fog is exactly where God wants me to be because it’s there that I have to cling to Him in order to make it through.
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” -2 Corinthians 12:9
If you’re frustrated thinking God has punished you with fog, lift up your eyes. He loves you and is with you every step of the way, even if it feels like you are walking the same circle for the tenth time. You were designed to lean on Him to hang on and let Him guide you through the fog.
It might mean you have to go slower than you want, but don’t run ahead because you won’t be able to see and you’ll get lost. Remember, God operates on His timeline, not yours. Walk with Him and don’t run ahead.
Instead of praying for the fog to clear, pray for greater faith and greater trust that He will guide you through the areas where you can’t see a thing. Pray for the courage to release the need to see and become fully dependent on Him. Pray for the strength to walk by faith and not by sight and then cling to HIM and not the comfort of seeing the road ahead.
