Q&A with singer/songwriter Molly Kate Kestner

When I first met Molly she had just had a YouTube video go viral and she was flown to New York to appear on Good Morning America and met with dozens of record labels.

We spent the following New Years together at my home in Washington and she told me she was moving to LA. I was so thankful to have one my best friends living near me, and it’s been an absolute JOY to watch this woman blossom into the singer and songwriter she is today. (she also had a new song come out on Friday and its amazing, check it out) Her soul is beautiful and her heart is extraordinary.

I’m bursting with excitement for you to have a little peep into her life because I know her story will encourage you!

Hey Molly!! Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Molly Kate. I’m 22 years old. I grew up in Minnesota but I currently reside in Los Angeles, California. I’m a signed artist to Atlantic Records and have had the privilege of writing/working for other artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Ryan Tedder & Jason Mraz.

How did you get into singing? Tell us about your journey and how you ended up in LA.

So when I was a senior in high school I put up a video of a song I had written and it ended up going viral. Before I knew it I was flying out to L.A. and New York to meet with record labels and appear on morning talk shows. That whole chapter of my life is still kind of hard to believe when I think about it. It all happened so fast and changed my life drastically. Rather than going to college for 4 years, I decided to sign a record deal. I flew back and forth for about a year before I finally made the decision to move to L.A. I packed everything I owned into my Honda Civic and drove across the country with my best friend. 2 years later and here I am.

Take us through a day in the life of Molly Kate. We want all the details!

[su_spacer]

My life is very inconsistent, but no matter where I am or what my schedule is, my days all typically start the same way… LOTS of coffee. Then, I’ll usually practice piano or workout. If I have a songwriting session, that will usually start at 12 p.m. and go until 7 or 8 p.m. Then, I’ll come home and spend time with my husband. My very favorite thing is getting to decompress and debrief our days with each other. But not everyday is a writing session. Somedays it is a photoshoot, meetings, shooting video content and my favorite days are the ones where I play a show.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

[su_spacer]

I think I would tell her to not be so hard on herself. If there is one thing I’ve learned in life it’s that no one is or ever will be perfect. The people you compare yourself to that seem to “have it all together”… don’t. I think the older I’ve gotten. I’ve learned to embrace my weaknesses and imperfections. Rather than trying to be perfect, I try to be vulnerable. Authenticity inspires authenticity.

What’s on the horizon for you this year?

[su_spacer]
Already this year, there have been some pretty exciting things happening. I had a song I wrote called “Bed of Roses” come out with Afrojack. My song “Compromise” got synced in a nation-wide LG commercial. As for the rest of the year, I am looking into some different tours and planning to put out more music!

What (or who) inspires you to #DoStuff?

[su_spacer]
I think the biggest thing that inspires me to #DoStuff is my faith. I believe that I was created with purpose and a specific calling. I am called to spread light and love in the midst of darkness. That is what drives me and what inspires my music. In a time of such great division, I want to build bridges and bring healing to those who are hurt.

And lastly, what’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

[su_spacer]

I am OBSESSED with Cookie Butter Ice Cream. You can get it at Trader Joe’s and it’s amazing!
