Q+A with Filmmaker and World Traveler, BC Serna

It amazes me how Instagram can connect you with some of the most incredible individuals on this planet. I’ve met some of my best friends through this app and been plugged into some really cool communities.

Last year I came across BC Serna’s profile as he was traveling the country with some friends in a van called “The Traveling Good” and immediately wanted to know how I could get involved and help. Essentially their mission was to build communities engaged in making a difference, start conversations about discovering purpose, and create a culture of loving people radically. EPIC RIGHT?!

I was lucky enough to meet the team and help out with their Seattle event and was blown away by their hearts for service.

Every time I check in, BC is always doing something amazing whether its traveling the world, creating inspiring videos or serving as a Young Life leader in his home in LA.

I can’t wait for you all to hear his story so let’s get right to it!!

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I currently live in LA but from Denver. I’ve been so blessed and fortunate to have traveled the world for the past 10 years being able to highlight people and organizations making a difference. Traveling the world is fun but being a Younglife leader for the past 5 years was way more fun.

Take us through a day in the life of BC. We want to know all the details!

I usually have a solo dance party every morning before I go for a run haha, love music and dancing! I love hosting events at my house that bring together people that are passionate and trying to make a difference in the world. I’m usually shooting or editing videos for organizations or my youtube!

Out of everywhere your work/projects have taken you, where has been your favorite place you’ve traveled?

Hard question! I love Uganda and Kenya a ton for the warmth and welcoming cultures but one of my all time favorites and most culturally stimulating and challenging was Japan. Such incredible culture and history!

How has your perspective on life or people changed as a result of your traveling?

Traveling invites you into a much bigger story, where you’re now part of a mission and movement to use your place of opportunity and privileged to help shift the world, culture, and other peoples lives. It also allows you to see your everyday decisions have a ginormous impact in millions of peoples lives.

What’s next on your travel list? Any dream destinations?

I’ll be taking high schoolers to Haiti and Europe this summer for my heart led leadership program but my dream place is New Zealand! No plans yet but can’t wait to explore that beautiful place and make believe that I’m Frodo from LOTR 😉

You talk a lot about pursuing purpose. What does that look like in your life and how can someone find their purpose?

Great question. Purpose is for sure a huge spectrum for everyone, but I usually talk about how you can turn your pain into your purpose, your struggles and story have happen to you to allow you to help others walk thru theirs. Theres nothing more I try to hope for that people people mentors to the younger generation. I think high schoolers need so much support, love, and someone in their corners to encourage and walk thru life with them. Nothing gets me more stoked then when someone says they became a YoungLife leader because of my stories of how amazing it it!

You travel, serve, work, make videos and run a podcast…. how do you keep your soul healthy?!

I laugh a lot, like I’m always enjoying my friends and jokes we have. I’m always trying to get outside to play basketball or at the beach. My community for sure gives my heart joy. But overall, laughing!

What’s on the horizon for you this year?

Huge goal is to make the podcast come alive and expand the stories and conversations surrounding it. I’d love to host a purpose conference and purpose giving trips for people to come join on!

Who or what inspires you to #DoStuff?

I’m always inspired by people putting others before themselves, living in alignment with their passions, soul, and purpose.

And lastly, what’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Haha Vegan Chocolate Mint for sure!! Or cookie dough!
