Whenever I’m going through a trial my gut reflex prayer is, “SAVE ME JESUS!! CHANGE MY SITUATION AND GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!” Then I get frustrated, confused and annoyed when nothing changes and God doesn’t show up instantly and take all my problems away like I wish He would.
Each time this happens God gently shows me that sometimes (and most times), there is more value in me going through the struggle than being rescued from it. Jesus isn’t an escape or a ‘get out of jail free’ card.
I waste so much time looking high and low for an escape route or trap door to get me out of my problem. I spend hours asking God for breakthrough when all the while He’s been telling me, “YOU ARE THE BREAKTHROUGH!” God uses YOU, where you are to bring the Kingdom to your situation. No magic keys, no trap doors.
I believe Jesus wants to invade our situation and instead of changing our circumstances, change our hearts. When Jesus comes into the room, everything changes and what this world needs more than saving, is a Savior.
In trials we are more aware of our need for Him and have no option but to lean on His goodness and trust in His faithfulness.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” – Psalm 3:5-6
As we walk through the valley we are strengthened by His presence and given every tool we need to make it out victoriously. As the Israelites looked at the giant sea in front of them, they quickly felt the weight of the impossibility of crossing over it loom over them.
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” – Pslam 23:4
They didn’t have the option of walking away from or around the problem. The only way to get across was to walk straight through it. And in that moment, God parted the sea so they could do just that.
“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wallof water on their right and on their left.” – Exodus 14:21-22
Every time I’m faced with an impossible task or a discouraging situation, instead of asking God to instantly make it go away, I ask Him to give me the endurance to push through the hardship and the capacity to love people through it. I ask Him to stretch and strengthen my heart and to give me eyes to see what He wants me to learn from where I am. I ask for more of Him in my situation and the strength to be the breakthrough.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
– 2 Corinthians 12:9
Whatever it is you’re going through, ask God to show up and show you why you are in the situation you’re in. If it feels like you’re surrounded, don’t forget who’s on your team and that YOU are the breakthrough. Ask God for strength and courage to be a shining light for Him in the darkness.
Praying for you and believing in you this week.
