I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE HERE!

#DOSTUFF

Willa’s first birthday was one of those moments I wanted to get every single detail right and the smash cake was at the top of the list. I knew I wanted something she could actually dig into and enjoy without loading her up with refined sugar on her very first taste of birthday cake. This healthy banana smash cake was the answer and it delivered completely. Soft, naturally sweet from ripe bananas and applesauce, with the most adorable greek yogurt cream cheese frosting that she absolutely demolished. The photos from that smash session are some of my favorite we have ever taken and I think the cake being something I actually felt great about made the whole moment even sweeter.

The cake itself is made entirely with wholesome ingredients you probably already have on hand. Mashed ripe bananas and a splash of applesauce do all the sweetening so there is no refined sugar anywhere in the recipe. Whole wheat or oat flour keeps the texture soft and tender, eggs and milk bind everything together, and a little cinnamon and vanilla add that warm cozy flavor that makes this taste like a real cake and not a health food experiment. It comes together in one bowl and bakes in about twenty minutes which means you have more time to focus on setting up the smash cake session and less time stressing in the kitchen.

You have two frosting options depending on what you are going for. The classic greek yogurt and cream cheese version is light, slightly tangy, and perfectly baby friendly with no added sweetener needed. The peanut butter cream cheese version is richer and a little more dessert-like which is perfect if adults are going to be eating it too and you want something that tastes a little more indulgent. Both come together in minutes and both hold up beautifully on the cake. For babies under one skip any maple syrup in the frosting and let the natural flavors do all the work.

This banana smash cake is proof that a first birthday cake can be nourishing and completely delicious at the same time. Whether you are doing a full smash cake photoshoot, a small family celebration, or just want something special for your little one that you feel completely good about, this is the recipe. Make it the day before your party and store it covered in the fridge overnight so it is perfectly set and ready to go when the big moment arrives.

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 2 medium ripe bananas mashed
  • ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce optional, adds moisture and extra sweetness
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup whole milk or unsweetened non-dairy milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour or oat flour for a softer, gluten-free option
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon optional
  • Pinch of salt

For the frosting:

  • ½ cup full-fat Greek yogurt or plain coconut yogurt
  • 2-3 tbs cream cheese or coconut cream
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional for adults tasting it too: 1–2 teaspoons maple syrup or mashed banana

For a Richer Option:

  • 3 tablespoons natural peanut butter
  • 2 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1–2 teaspoons maple syrup

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease two 4-inch round cake pans (or one 6-inch pan) and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  • Mash the bananas in a large bowl until smooth. Whisk in applesauce, eggs, milk, and vanilla.
  • In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Add dry ingredients to wet and stir gently until just combined—don’t overmix.
  • Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  • Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool completely before removing from pans and frosting.
  • Make the frosting: Stir together yogurt, cream cheese, and vanilla until smooth. If it’s too soft, chill for 20 minutes before spreading.
  • Assemble: Spread frosting between layers and on top. Decorate simply with banana slices or berries.

For the richer option frosting:

  • Use a hand mixer or whisk to beat all ingredients together until fluffy and smooth. Chill before using for easier spreading.
