If you’ve been anywhere near social media lately, you’ve probably seen the dot cakes taking over. These little cups layered with cake, frosting, and covered in colorful dot sprinkles have been going viral out of New York City and while I was skeptical at first, honestly the hype is completely deserved. They’re adorable, they’re indulgent, and they photograph like a dream. But if you’re not in NYC and you’re craving one, I’ve got you covered because we’re making a brownie version at home and it might actually be better than the original.

Introducing Dot Cake Brownies. Same concept, but with a chocolate upgrade. We start with a layer of fudgy brownie on the bottom, add a swoop of rich chocolate frosting in the middle, then pile on brownie flavored whipped cream on top, and finish the whole thing off with a generous coat of those iconic dot sprinkles. The result is this perfectly layered little cup that looks like it came straight from a trendy NYC dessert shop but took you maybe 20 minutes in your own kitchen.

What I love about this recipe is that it takes something that feels really special and makes it totally doable at home. The individual cups make them perfect for serving at a party, gifting to friends, or just making a fun little treat for yourself on a weeknight when you want something that feels a little extra. They’re also a huge hit with kids, which means they double as the most fun movie night snack situation you’ve ever put together.

Whether you’ve been wanting to try the viral dot cakes or you’re just a brownie lover looking for a fun new way to enjoy them, this one is for you. They’re rich, they’re creamy, they’re covered in sprinkles, and they are genuinely so fun to make and eat. Once you try them in brownie form I have a feeling you won’t be going back to the original. Dot Cake Brownies
Ingredients
- 3 boxes brownie mix (and everything it requires) (I personally think Ghirardelli double Chocolate is superior)
- 1 tub chocolate frosting
- 1 tub Cool Whip
- 1/2 cup brownie mix (the dry powder)
- 1 cup rainbow dot sprinkles
Instructions
- Bake brownies according to box. For 12 dot cakes I did 2 bags of Ghirardelli brownie mix in a 9×13 pan for 40 minutes. (you can do 1 box of brownies it just won't make as many)
- Using a circle cookie cutter the same size as the bottom of your cups or jars, cut out brownies and place in the bottom of your vessel.
- Transfer chocolate frosting into a piping bag and add a layer of frosting (or just swirl it on with a spoon)
- In a medium bowl, mix Cool Whip with 1/2 cup dry brownie mix until combined.
- Add a generous serving of brownie cool whip on top of the chocolate frosting and smooth completely so its flat and level against the edge of the cup.
- Dump sprinkles out onto a plate and dip cup upside down pressing gently into the sprinkles.
- ENJOY! Store in the fridge for up to 4 days.
